CHILE PEPPER MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES
THE WINNERS OF THE 2004 FIERY FOOD CHALLENGE
Salmon Arm’s Denzel’s Gourmet Foods, Ltd. Seizes Third Place Golden Chile Award
Fort Worth, TX—Chile Pepper magazine, America’s only culinary title covering the zesty food movement, announces the winners of its 2004Fiery Food Challenge – the longest running and most prestigious competition in the fast flourishing world of spicy foods. This year’s competition harvested 803 submissions – up from 483 last year – in over 80 categories, marking the largest one-year increase in the contest’s history. Among the winners was Denzel’s Gourmet Foods from Salmon Arm , BC , Canada whose Denzel’s Kamikaze Hot Sauce won a third place award in the Hot Sauce/International category.
“The overwhelming popularity of the Fiery Food Challenge is a testament to the zesty food movement’s universal presence in today’s food culture,” said Publisher Joel Gregory. “With award-winning brands like Denzel’s Gourmet Foods emerging all over the U.S. , more categories were created to accommodate the quantity and diversity of products. As the sole editorial voice for the movement, Chile Pepper is honored to offer a platform for these brands to compete for spicy supremacy.”
Conceived as a means of acknowledging top-quality products and implemented through a series of blind taste tests by culinary professionals, the Fiery Food Challenge has become the zesty food industry benchmark, and the Golden Chile award the supreme honor for producers of spicy foodstuffs. This year, the panel convened to judge the submissions in Fort Worth , TX from September 23-25.
As the premiere editorial resource for lovers of zesty cuisine, Chile Pepper serves a rapidly expanding universe. Salsas outsell ketchups as the number one condiment purchased in America; major food processors, such as Frito Lay, Tyson, Heinz and McCormick have added several spicy flavors to their product lines; and industry sources indicate that there were 3.1 billion barbecue and grilling cookouts in 1999 (up from 1.4 billion in 1987). Chile Pepper speaks to this large and growing body of people who favor Barbecue, Mexican, Italian, Southwestern, Cajun, Asian and other zesty cuisines.
