SALMON ARM, BC – Denzel’s Gourmet Foods is burning up the international hot sauce scene, seizing six top awards from two independent US-based competitions. The 2005 International Fiery Foods Challenge, with 875 entries; and the Scovie Awards, with 600, are the Academy and Oscar awards of the zesty food industry.

Now in its third year of operation, the BC-based Denzel’s landed a Golden Chile Award in the ‘no-extract’ category for their Fire Hazard Hot Sauce from the Fiery Foods Challenge in Fort Worth, TX.

“As a hot sauce maker, that’s the one you want to win,” says owner Denzel Sandberg. “Lots of hot sauce makers have gone to the dark side by using extract, but you don’t really taste those brands, you only feel them.”

Denzel’s habanero streak blazed on to Albuquerque, NM where, at the Scovie Awards, their Fire Hazard and Dangerous Goods sauces earned first and second places. Other Scovie awards for the family-run, Canadian company included: Mom’s Apples & Cinnamon, first in Fruit; and third place each for Pineapple Punch and Kamikaze in Fruit and World Beat categories, respectively.

Making a winning hot sauce can raise as much sweat as eating it. Using exclusive contracts with certified local organic pepper growers, Denzel’s has chosen the harder row to hoe because, says Sandberg, “It is farming, not chemistry, and you’re at the mercy of the season. But buying BC ingredients is worth it because we get the best stuff: locally grown and extremely fresh.”

Capsaicin, the active ingredient that packs the heat into hot sauce, causes the human brain to release a natural painkiller called endorphin inducing a natural high or euphoria for gourmet and recreational users alike.
