HOT DOG! LOCAL MUSTARD TAKES GOLD

"Woo hoo!" e-mailed barbecue champ Ronnie Shewchuk from North Vancouver when he learned the Ronnie and Denzel's Honey Mustard BBQ Sauce took gold at the 16th annual Napa Valley Mustard Festival's Worldwide Mustard Competition. He and partner Denzel Sandberg of Enderby, B.C. also won two first place awards in the 2009 Scovie Awards last November for their Island Heat BBQ Sauce and Red BBQ Sauce.

"We're so excited because these awards are the biggest in the world. To win first place in each of the competitions blew us away," says Shewchuk. "Denzel [Sandberg] is the chief cook in this partnership and he's been making hot sauces in Enderby. We've collaborated on these sauces and it's great to have this local product take the awards."

"Their honey mustard BBQ sauce has a perfect tangy mustard flavour," said Barry Levenson, curator of the mount Horeb Mustard Museum and Napa Valley Mustard Festival producer. "It's a real feather in their cap."

If you'd like to buy a bottle of the mustard sauce, see www.denzelshotsauce.com. It's $10 for a 355-mL bottle. Also, Well Seasoned (Langley), Johnstones Barbecue and Parts (North Vancouver) and Edgemont Village Wines (North Vancouver) carry the mustard.
